Phenomenological Broadcast

I had one of my tracks broadcast to no one yesterday. It was part of a sound-art project, read about it here. Does a sound exist if no-one is there to hear it?

  1. Yes a sound does exist if no one is there to hear it, because there are lots of sounds all the time that we dont hear but other animals do! so a human might not be listening to it but an insect might be, so it is being heard, also sound travels so whos to say did hear it . . . .!

    1. its not always about what you can prove, sometimes its about what you feel and believe! if you believe sound can travel and you believe someone heard it, then they did!

    2. Sound is a vibration so it would have an impact on it's surroundings, but very small. You could possibly detect those impacts after playing the sound. Or just put up a mic and listen to it later, kind of cheating...

  3. This is very similar to the question of does a room continue to exist when you're not in it. Taking the two concepts as a whole, you could then ask the question of how can a sound be heard if no-one is present and in a space that potentially isn't there?
